Becoming a public figure might sound like the best deal until you get to experience the dark side of stardom. Getting fame is not just about having a die-hard army of fans who would not hear a word against you, being papped outside your gyms and party halls, or being asked for autographs and selfies day in and out. It is also about dealing with depression, body insecurities, threats, constant invasion of privacy, and sometimes the root cause of these issues is online trolls. Trolls are keyboard warriors on the internet who assume that public figures are easily accessible online and can be subjected to hate as per their moods and opinions. Although many believe it’s part and parcel of a celeb’s life, they’re only humans at the end of the day and have a limit beyond which they can’t withstand trolling. That’s why, time and again, celebrities have given back to trolls in their style, and if you want to know the hows and whys, read on.

Presenting a list of Bollywood and Hollywood celebrities who gave back to their trolls in a befitting manner:

1. Sushant Singh Rajput

Back in the times when a section of Indians was enraged about the historical depiction of the movie Padmavat (then Padmavati) and trolled Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput came in support of the director. He chose to drop his surname from Twitter for a day to show his support to the famed director. SSR even had to face trolling for extending his support to the movie, although he had a befitting response for the trolls. Check it out.

This American singer-songwriter Kelly Clarkson has also paid the price of being famous by being the target for online trolls on several occasions. There was one instance when a Twitter user @resistzfutile targeted Kelly, and called her pathetic. And Kelly didn’t shy away from taking a dig at her troll. Have a look:

3. Sania Mirza

Ever since this Indian tennis champion married Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, trolls have left no occasion to take pot-shots at her because of the equation between the two countries. One of the trolls (named: Romeo Gold 2.0 on Twitter) tweeted:

“Happy Independence Day @MirzaSania.. aapka independence day aaj hi hai na (Your Independence Day must be today).”

This troll was as distasteful because he tried to put a question mark on her nationality. But Sania had an apt response to the troll, and we think she couldn’t give it back any better. Take a look at her tweet:

4. Ariana Grande

When one is as popular as Ariana Grande, it isn’t surprising to see trolls making it their full-time job to seek attention. And out of all the times she’s given it back to the trolls, this one response by Ariana was the wittiest and most rib-tickling. So, many of you might have noticed that Ariana squints while focusing on an object placed at a distance from her and we adore her that way. But Twitteratis found this meme-worthy and shared memes of her squinting while trolling her for it. Here’s what a Twitter user had to say about Ari:

And here’s how Ari took to Instagram with a picture of a squinting fish, as she asked her fans if she should get LASIK done.

So quite recently, Riteish Deshmukh shared a funny tweet about how the prices of sweets have spiked due to the festive season. He also added that the cost of weight loss is still higher, and so people should choose wisely on what benefits them. And that tweet, instead of stirring up laugh riots, managed to grab extremist trolls’ attention. And they did what they do best, accusing him of being biased towards Hindu festivals. But Riteish managed to handle the troll with his witty reply. Take a look:

The American singer-songwriter P!nk was subjected to online trolls after her pictures from a cancer benefit event surfaced on the internet in 2015. As people started body-shaming her based on those pictures, P!nk took to Twitter to respond to her trolls. This is what she posted:

Although J.K. Rowling is not new to the game of giving it back to her trolls, this time around, it was more of a political feud fuming the trolls. It all started in 2017 when she quote-tweeted one of the tweets of Mike Pence, and this tweet along with several others in opposition to Trump’s governance, progressed to a series of trolls and media coverage. As this tweet did not go well with the Trump supporters, they started trolling her and burning her books. But Rowling, being Rowling, had a better way to deal with them. Have a look at how it started and how she gave it back in her own inimitable way.

Trolls like these exist in everyone’s lives in different ways. So next time an internet troll or an aunty from your neighborhood tries to put you down with comments like these, you have enough inspiration from these celebs on how to put them in place. Being polite or savage is going to be your pick. We’re sure you’d do the needful when time demands.
