9 Things That I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Planned My Wedding

Written by Saumya Gaur  •

The wedding season is here, and almost all of us have that one friend or relative who is lining up next to the mandap, ready to tie the knot. Seeing all this festivity around me brings back memories of my own wedding. I, myself took the plunge a few months back, and while my wedding day turned out to be everything I had dreamt of, the days leading up to it were mind-numbingly stressful.

The stress was partly my doing. I had a certain vision of my wedding day, and I was convinced that I and only I, can ensure that it’s carried out perfectly. And hence, I tried to oversee every aspect of the wedding, which led to me being overwhelmed by the numerous decisions that I had to make. Even thinking about it now gives me jitters. And now that the wedding season is almost here, a lot of hopeful brides/grooms-to-be must be experiencing the same. So I decided to make a list of all the things that I wish someone had told me before I turned into the bridezilla so that I can help my sisters in need. Here they are:

1. Get Someone Else To Be The Contact Person

In my wedding, I had to act as the contact person on many fronts, and because I was the bride, by the end, I was loaded with responsibilities. Due to this, a lot of things went haywire, and a lot slipped through the cracks. Lesson learned. If you can afford a wedding planner then it’s great, and if you can’t, then assign the role of the point person to someone whose judgment you trust completely. This will help you out in a big way.

2. Choose The Venue Carefully

Never skimp when it comes to the venue, but also don’t go overboard. Look for a venue that suits your taste, and has enough facilities to accommodate your guests.
And remember, if you are getting a too-good-to-be-true discount at a venue, then it probably is. Inspect everything thoroughly before finalizing anything.

3. Sample Every Thing

I don’t know what it is about samples, I can never ask for them without feeling a tad embarrassed. I feel like I am imposing a little by asking for them. However, when it comes to the wedding business, there is one cardinal rule — sample everything. Yes, even the décor. Ask your decorator if you can see an example of their past work or better still, see if they have an ongoing project, and make your decision based on that.

4. Sort Out Your Priorities In Advance

Figure out what ranks where on your priority ladder. Do you want a fun and laidback wedding or one with all the trimmings? What requires your attention the most — the music, the decorations, or the party favors? This will help you focus your attention where it’s most needed, and you can delegate the rest of the responsibilities without anything holding you back.

5. Try To Balance Out The Choices

In India, weddings are as much about the families of the bride, and the groom, as it is about them. Therefore, for a wedding to be considered a success, one must take everyone’s taste into account. If you prefer a small intimate gathering, and your parents want a big fat Indian wedding, then try to work out a middle ground, instead of butting heads with them. You will be much happier for it in the long run.

6. Don’t Feel Obligated To Invite Everyone You Know

There is no rule that says that you have to invite everyone you know to your wedding. Doing so will not only escalate your wedding costs, but it will also crowd your wedding with people who wouldn’t really be there to share your big day. They will be there to have a good time on your dime. And it’s far better to spend that money on a luxurious honeymoon than freeloaders.

7. Keep A Handle On The Open Bar

While weddings are the perfect occasions for wining, dining, and making merry, you don’t want the crowd to get too wild on the booze. So stock the bar with wine and beer. If our guests prefer hard drinks, they can have it on their own dime. Plus, this way you also get to save some money.

8. Choose A Photographer Who Matches Your Wavelength

This is one of the most important. Pictures are a way to freeze your precious memories in time. So, you don’t want to look awkward or uncomfortable in them. In order to avoid this, get a photographer who understands your vision and is willing to capture it rather than opting for someone who does run-of-the-mill kind of stuff.

9. Remember That It’s All About You

This might be the last item on the list, but it’s the most important piece of advice for bride and grooms-to-be. Remember, it’s all about you, so don’t give in to peer pressure. Do things your way. After all, those who matter to you, won’t mind, and those who will mind, won’t matter to you.

Hope this list solved at least some of your wedding worries. If you have any other suggestions to add to this, let us know in the comments.
