The harsh truth is that long tresses need a lot more care than shorter hair. Long hair is more prone to getting tangled and hence can break more easily. If you have fine or color-treated hair, then you know that it’s even more trouble to keep it silky and healthy. The longer your hair gets, the more fragile it tends to become. Hence, you need to be very careful about how you treat your long hair. To put things simply, long hair requires special care and needs to be treated with care. You also need to protect your hair from daily wear and tear and make sure that you keep it tied up in a scarf or a scrunchie while you are working out. So besides these tips, we have nine other tips that you need to keep in mind when you are taking care of long hair:

1. Get Regular Trims

It’s understandable to want to preserve your long hair. However, you must get regular trims if you want to keep your hair looking luscious and healthy. A neat trim will help you get rid of split ends and damage. We would suggest that you get trims at least every ten or twelve weeks if you want your hair to look it’s very best. Long tresses are more prone to split ends and damaged hair follicles, so a timely trim is necessary to let it grow in an orderly fashion.

2. Detangle Your Hair Daily

If you have long hair, then you know that it is more susceptible to tangles than short hair. Sometimes, laziness takes over while brushing our long tresses and we end up securing it into  a ponytail or a bun on a few days. But these skips will cost you more hair fall and damage. Brushing your hair daily can help avoid those painful knots and tangles and keep your hair looking soft, silky, and super shiny. Brushing your hair will also help prevent the formation of larger knots in your hair. We would suggest investing in a brush that has boar bristles as they can help distribute your hair’s natural oils better.

3. Comb Your Hair Carefully

Since long hair is prone to getting tangled, those who have lengthy tresses have to be extra careful when they are combing their hair. If you want to make sure that your hair doesn’t break, you need only to comb it when it is dry. If your hair is wet, make sure you gently towel dry it and use a detangling spray to smoothen it. Use a wide-toothed comb and start from the tips first. Once you’re done with the bottom of your hair, work your hair into sections and comb it. This way, you can get rid of knots without yanking out the hair on your scalp.

4. Shampoo Your Hair Less Often

If you wash your hair daily, then you need to stop doing so. Shampooing daily is terrible for your hair and will remove the natural oils present in your hair and leave it looking dry and rough. Instead, you need to wash your hair every third day unless you hit the gym daily and get sweaty. While showering, you probably apply more shampoo on your hair than on your scalp and roots. This, however, needs to be changed. You need to concentrate on cleaning your scalp as that is where all of the oil collects. Apply shampoo to your roots, massage it into a lather and then work down towards your tops.

5. Make Sure You Don’t Skip Using Hair Conditioner

One of the biggest secrets to luscious long hair and making it look healthy, silky, and shiny is using a hair conditioner. Conditioning your hair will help hydrate, smoothen, repair any damage caused to it, and fight off frizz. Avoid applying conditioner to your roots, as they can weigh down your locks. Let the oil do that deep scalp work and focus only on your tresses while applying conditioner. Make sure to wash it off thoroughly because any remnant will damage your scalp hair.

6. Choose The Right Hair Products

Yes, long hair needs a lot more nourishment than short hair does, and hence you need to ensure that you are using products with a lightweight formula. If you use a heavier product, it will weigh your hair down. Make sure that you use a heat protectant serum before you style or blow-dry your hair, as this will help create a barrier between the heat of the styling tool and your hair.

7. Try Getting A Weekly Hair Treatment

Since you give your skin weekly beauty treatments, why not do the same with your hair strands? Warm-up jojoba and coconut oil for those days when your hair is feeling parched. Apply the oils to your ends and your roots and leave them on for about twenty to thirty minutes. Once this is done, rinse off your hair with lukewarm water and continue with your regular shampoo and condition process. During summers, we would recommend that you lather on a deep conditioner before you take a dip in the pool or ocean to protect your hair from damage caused by chlorine.

8. Opt For Loose Hairdos

While we all know that tying your hair up in buns or ponytails is a great way to keep hair off your face, it’s important not to tie your hair up too tight as this can cause strain and stress. In general, you need to avoid tying up your hair too tight as it can yank at your hair and cause other issues. Braids are an incredible way for you to show off your long hair while still keeping things classy and interesting. If you tug at your hair too hard, there is a full possibility of your hairline receding unflatteringly.

9. Fight Off Split Ends

One of the best ways to avoid dealing with damaged hair is by using shampoos and creams to fight off any split ends. Split ends occur because of the fine hair that thins at the ends. You can also switch to natural homemade products or research some organic materials to avoid split ends from appearing.

It’s vital that you take good care of your hair regardless of its length. However, those with longer and thicker hair know that it’s easier said than done. Having said that, long hair gives you more options to experiment with hairstyles and looks bomb to compliment whatever you choose to wear.
