Toilet Mistakes You Didn’t Know You Were Making

Written by Shivani K  •

Yeah sure, we’ve been going to the bathroom since we learnt how to walk. But, how many of us are satisfied completely when we get out of bathrooms? We’re talking about the most important, “business” of the day – pooping. Sure, it doesn’t make for nice drawing room conversations, but it is a topic which must be discussed freely. When it comes to this daily ritual we just want to get in, do our business without any hassle, and then get out and carry on with the rest of the day feeling light and breezy.

That isn’t the case with everybody though. Most of the people out there don’t really have an ideal bathroom experience. And this can lead to a lot of health problems like constipation, infections, and other such health issues. Sometimes, it leaves us feeling uneasy. This feeling has the power to put a dampener on your day. So, what are the toilet mistakes we’re making that hinder a good bathroom experience? Of course, we understand that all of us cannot openly ask others about it. Therefore, like always, we’ve made your lives easier by listing down the common toilet mistakes that all of us commit from time to time. Read on to have a pleasant experience in the throne room!

1. You’re Sitting Inside The Bathroom For Way Too Long

We understand that your bathroom is one place where your peace and quiet is guaranteed. It’s a nice, quiet place where you can do your business and also read your favorite magazine or check Instagram posts of your favorite influencer. However, what you’re unaware of is that this habit of yours can be very harmful. Sitting on the toilet seat for too long stresses out the veins present in the lowest part of your rectum. This can cause them to swell which can lead to hemorrhoids. These definitely clear up in a week or so, but its very existence can cause great discomfort to you. If you find yourself suffering from hemorrhoids, go visit a doctor who will give you proper medication for it. If hemorrhoids are left untreated, they can also lead to serious conditions like colon cancer.

2. You’re Pushing Too Hard

Anal fissures are a problem we face when we push too hard to get that stubborn stool out of our bodies. Holding your breath and pushing too hard can also lead to hemorrhoids. All this occurs due to the presence of constipated poop within you. One way to make sure your stool is pliable so that it doesn’t cause you any discomfort when you pass it, is to increase your intake of fiber and fluids. One tip we would like to give you is to squat a couple of times before hitting the toilet seat. This will align the intestinal tract in the natural most position which will help you have a strain-free bathroom experience.

3. You’re Not Peeping At Your Own Poop

Okay, we admit this one is a little gross. But, just a quick glance of your poop can help you analyze your health better than the numerous clinical tests. A stool which is sausage-shaped and smooth signals healthy gastrointestinal condition. If you are finding your poop to be hard or lumpy then it’s a signal that you have to increase your fluid and fiber intakes. If your poop is that of a pee’s consistency then it might be a result of some mild food poisoning, an infection, or even a sign of serious conditions like celiac disease. If the stool is pencil-thin, then it’s a clear cut sign of colon cancer. Therefore, make it a habit to observe your bowel movements and make it a point to visit a doctor if you feel your stool doesn’t look healthy.

4. You’re Ignoring The Stinky Pee

You must have eaten asparagus for dinner the previous night. This would be the reason for your pee to stink the following morning. These green stalks contain certain acids which are broken down into smelly substances upon digestion. But it’s not every day that you eat asparagus. A lot of other reasons like medications, certain foods, and vitamins make your urine smell bad. But, that doesn’t mean you can ignore the stink. If your pee gives out an extremely unpleasant odor, and if it is dark and cloudy, then these could be signs of urinary tract infection, liver infections, bladder infections or an exacerbated diabetic condition. Visit a doctor if you observe these signs.

5. You’re Not Flushing With Your Lid Down

Imagine you flush after a really satisfying pooping experience with the lid of your toilet seat open and some poop flick goes flying in the air. Therefore, make it a point to start following this new rule of “lid down and flush.” And also feel free to do a quick survey of the things kept around the toilet seat in your bathroom. And maybe put that toothbrush in the medicine cabinet (you know, just in case).
