If I asked you which of the two, men or women, do you think is the more mysterious or enigmatic gender, what would you say? Well, most of you are likely to come back with the answer “women.” Women, after all, have always been relegated to work behind the scenes, while men went on to become the movers and shakers of the world. Men carry the load of the world on their shoulders (literally, look at the statue of Atlas). They are the face of our society much to the chagrin of the fairer sex.

But despite all that, there is more to men than what meets the eye. Men too, have a couple of secrets that they hide from everyone else These secrets are the ones which are going to leave you baffled and surprised, but worry not, they also have the backing of the science behind them. No, no. This is certainly not me seeking to score brownie points with my sisters, it’s a scientific finding. According to a theory published by Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist, from the London School of Economics and Political Science, men have always been somewhat polyamorous as it is an evolutionary impulse. But according to Kanazawa, more intelligent men value fidelity and develop other practices to evolve (1).

It seems that Mother Nature has reserved her wrath for the darker sex. In a report collected by the weather portal AccuWeather, it was found that 82 percent of the 648 people who died after being struck by lightning, between 1995 to 2008, were men. And another study proved that men accounted for 84 percent lightning deaths and 82 percent of lightning injuries. In fact, they were 4.6 times more likely to be killed and 5.3 times more likely to be injured than women (2).

Well, keeping in mind examples like Dwayne “Rock” Jhonson and Vin Diesel, we can say that we were very aware of this one. So while male pattern baldness is a reality that strikes fear in the hearts of every mortal man, perhaps it comes with its own silver lining. A study found that bald men were perceived to be stronger and more masculine. In fact, it even found that woman perceived such men to be almost an inch taller than they are (3). So if your man is losing hair, don’t worry, all’s not lost yet.

Men with their long legs can cover a large distance in a short number of steps, just like that and this is more evident to the poor women who accompany them. But it turns out that men who are accompanying their wife or girlfriend are actually walking slower than their original pace. No, I am not making this up. It has the backing of science (4).

When it comes to the matters of the heart, men don’t hold back. So while you are still battling your feelings for your beloved, he will lose no time in declaring his to the world. In fact, researchers have found that young men are three times more likely to articulate their affectionate feelings than women (5).

And here you thought that it was only you who spent half your lifetime in salons. While for most women, waxing is a monthly or bi-monthly ritual, men have to shave almost every other day.

It is estimated that almost 3000 hours, that is almost 4 months, of a man’s life goes into this preening ritual, (6). The next time your beau complains about you spending too much time in the bath, lawyer up with this fact!

Well, if you thought that men stare at women for an unusually long time, you are not wrong. It is a fact, that an average man spends about 43 minutes a day staring at 10 different women. Which makes their total 11 months and 11 days between the ages of 18–50 (7). Can you imagine? Checking out women for an entire year!

Women have earned this false reputation of being voluble and chatty when in reality, it’s the other way round! Yes, it’s true. A study has found that men spend about 76 minutes a day tattling about their colleagues and friends, compared to 52 minutes for women (8). I am pretty sure, all the ladies after reading this must be feeling pretty relieved!
