Notable industrialist and scion of the Ambani family, Anil Ambani, turned a year older today. The Ambani family had a small get together to celebrate their patriarch turning 61. Anil has been married to the love of his life, Tina Munim (now Ambani), since 1991 and the pair share two sons together. However, not all things were sunshine and roses for the couple. The pair had quite a few battlefields to cross and they did so astoundingly well. They’ve gone on to amass an empire and make a name for themselves in the business world. First Impressions
Tina and Anil met at a mutual friend’s wedding in the United States. At the time, Tina was an up and coming Bollywood actress and it was love at first sight for Anil. In an interview, he shared how she caught his eye as she was extremely beautiful and had on a gorgeous saree. Although, Tina was oblivious to Anil’s attraction towards her at the time and hence did not give it much thought. Alas, the pair did not become friends that day.
The pair later crossed each other’s paths once again while they were both in Philadelphia and Anil decided he would finally rack up the courage to go speak to her. With the help of a close friend, Anil shyly approached Tina only to be met with a cold look and contempt. Tina later admitted that it was because she was very used to being approached by random men and that she was in a live-in relationship with Rajesh Khanna at the time. When Anil met her, he asked her out on a lunch date and was met with a resounding no.
A Second Chance
Things between Rajesh Khanna and Tina Munim went south pretty quickly and the pair split up in 1986. Tina was in a bad state after her breakup and even made plans to quit Bollywood and head to the United States to study interior designing. She was in no mood to jump back into the dating pool. However, destiny had other plans. Her nephew told her about a certain Anil Ambani who came from a good Gujarati family just like them and she was intrigued.
Although the pair had a short interaction, Tina wanted to see Anil once again and although she postponed their date five times, she finally decided to give him a chance and the pair started dating. She later stated that she admired how simple he was and that he didn’t bother putting up a fancy show like other men did. The pair bonded on their Gujarathi roots and noticed they had a lot in common.
The Difficult Road To Marriage
Although Anil and Tina were very much in love they decided to keep their relationship as private as possible. However, since Anil was the son of business tycoon Dhirubai Ambai and Tina was a popular actress, their relationship soon caught the tabloids’ attention. Within no time, the news of their relationship landed in the laps of Anil’s parents and they weren’t okay with it. The family was apprehensive about Anil dating Tina due to her past with Rajesh Khanna and her roles in the film industry.
However, Anil eventually succumbed to parental pressure and decided to call off their relationship. Although Tina was heartbroken, she was extremely understanding of the situation and she decided to leave for the US to pursue further studies. The pair did not keep in touch for the full four years of her course.
Love Conquers All
Despite being quite the dutiful son, Anil could not get Tina off his mind and admitted in an interview that those four years away from her were extremely difficult. They had made a pact not to get in touch with one another and had been doing so until one fateful day in 1989. Around that time, there was news that Los Angeles, where Tina lived, had been hit by an earthquake. Fearing for her life, Anil made a call to her LA number and was surprised to hear her pick the phone up. This led Tina to finally accept that Anil truly was in love with her and cared deeply about her.
Anil’s commitment to Tina hadn’t gone unnoticed by his parents. Eventually, after all the struggles the pair had to go through, Anil’s parents finally accepted Tina as their daughter-in-law and all was well. In as filmy a way as possible, Anil hid information about their upcoming nuptials from Tina and she was surprised with the large and lavish Gurajthi wedding of her dreams.
