Facts You Didn’t Know About Mustaches

Okay, ladies, tell us honestly, aren’t you attracted to a guy who sports a perfectly groomed mustache? Well, we asked around and the women around us agreed. Our forefathers had been rocking the mustache for the longest time, and today men have given their own twist to this age-old facial feature. We agree that somewhere along the line clean-shaven men came to be more loved and adored, but ever since Movember or No-shave November came into existence, facial hair has become all the rage. You get to see a majority of the guys (handsome or not) sporting mustaches and tending to it as if it were their babies. And for us women, it means we get to see the most irresistible candies around us (winks).

Did you know that Albert Einstein kept his mustache for about 50 years (holy-moly!)? There are plenty of such facts about the mustache that both men and women aren’t aware of. We’re here to give you a heads up about a few of them.

1. It Has A Great History

The first man known for sporting a mustache dates back to 300 BC. He was an Iranian horseman and he did have a really thick black lip cap (1).

In the Victorian era, men used something called mustache spoons to protect their mustache from getting wet while drinking soup. This spoon had a rim that would act as a barrier between the mush and the soup.

2. The Man With The Longest Mush Ever Recorded

It’s an Indian! For Indians, growing a mustache is a matter of pride and they wouldn’t shave it for anyone. We checked the cyberspace to find out who sported the longest mustache in the history of mustaches and discovered that according to the Guinness Book of World Records — Ram Singh Chauhan holds the record for the longest stache ever to be sported by a man, that is 14 feet long (2). Unbelievable!

3. The Hair On Your Head And Mustache Is Not The Same

The reason behind this is that hair follicles contain different levels of pigmentations. This is the reason for the appearance of red patches on a mustache. Stress is one of the factors behind grey hair, similarly, exposure to the sun can also weaken your hair. Therefore, we suggest all the men out there to use a conditioner which has SPF in it.

4. The Mustache Has A Crazy Growth Rate

There are nearly 10000–20000 facial hairs on an average in a man. And the mustache accounts for nearly 600 of them. Men don’t really have to groom their mustache or beard for more than a month in order to be ready for Movember. This is because their mustache (or any facial hair on a man) grows by 0.4mm every day (3).

Another unique fact is that your mustache is going to turn grey before the hair on your head. However, as determined by your genetics, the hair on your head is more likely to start falling off after turning grey whereas your mush is only going get thicker and healthier as it ages.

5. Man Touches His Mustache At Least 760 Times In A Period Of 24 Hours

This is an average result. Maybe men do it because they love their mustache and are obsessed with it. Or, maybe they do it because they aren’t accustomed to the caterpillar growing above their mouth. Dr. Peterkin, who is the author of 1000 Mustaches: A Cultural History Of The Mo, says that on an average, men end up stroking their stache around 760 times in a day.

If you’re one who does the same, then we suggest you use beard oil to keep your beard nourished before preening it a thousand times.

6. A Healthy Diet For A Healthy Mustache

So if any of you men out there plan on growing a healthy lip cap that will attract women’s attention, then we suggest switching to a healthy diet. A study done at the University of Queensland in southern Australia has shown that a beard or a mustache can reduce the risk of skin cancer by 90–95 percent. How cool is that peeps!

It is said that during the historian times beard was considered to be a hindrance in hand-to-hand combat. In fact, Alexander the Great is said to have made all his soldiers shave before they set out on a battle of Arbela.
