Let’s be real. There’s only one place for yummy food to go, and that is inside your tummy. However, some Bollywood music producers think it’s a great idea to turn food items into item numbers. You’re probably wondering what bizarre and misogynistic ideas these music directors had in mind when they decided to make these songs. And while some of these songs might have had us singing our hearts out as kids, we now know how they objectify women and degrade them to favor the male gaze. From comparing women to Fevicol, jalebi, and mirchis, Indian music directors have done it all. So let’s take a look at the weirdest and most unappetizing (pun intended) songs based on food.

1. Jalebi Bai

Firstly, what even is that main step Mallika Sherawat does? I’m no sweets maker, but even I know that you don’t need to shake your hips vigorously to make jalebis. And secondly, who is named Jalebi Bai? Like your parents would have to really be obsessed with the sweet to name you after it. Thirdly, why are the men staring at her torso like it’s made of gold? Like, close your mouth uncle! The weirdest thing about this song was that it topped charts across the country and tonnes of people were obsessed with it. The song was a hit at every party, be it a kid’s birthday party or a wedding celebration. While most popular Indian movies do feature item numbers, this one definitely takes the cake for being super weird. I don’t think I will ever look at jalebis the same way again.

2. Mohabbat Hai Mirchi

Okay, we all watched this song for a young Zayed Khan. Back in the day, he was considered the ultimate eye candy and bad boy. Although, his career sort of fizzled out eventually, he did have a few fun roles and many considered him extremely attractive . Sure, we get that “Mirchi” is supposed to mean something like spicy love but I think the makers of this song clearly missed the point. Love isn’t supposed to be “spicy”, it’s supposed to be unconditional.

3. Ice Cream Khaungi

Okay, but why is Honey Singh rapping in the 1960s? Pretty sure Hindi rappers didn’t exist during this time. To be honest, what could we expect from a film named Xpose that stars none other than Himesh Reshammiya and his equally weird accent. Well, at least he ditched the hat for this song. The lyric “Ice cream khaungi, Kashmir jaongi” makes no sense. Did the writer mean that eating cold ice creams will automatically teleport you to Kashmir? Or did they mean that eating ice cream gives you the feeling of being in Kashmir? Honestly, I don’t think any of us will ever find out what was going on in their minds.

4. Doodh Ban Jaungi Malai Ban Jaungi

Can we just start by saying, how are any of these food items connected to each other? The lyrics go, “Doodh ban jaungi, malai ban jaungi, machhi ban jaungi kabab ban jaungi…”

As someone who is a lover of fish and kebabs, this does not sound appealing from any angle whatsoever. What makes matters worse is the old uncles leeching at the girl dancing while drinking alcohol in the background. I wish I could tell you that the song gets better as it goes on but it just gets progressively worse as the singer compares herself from everything to fish, cream, alcohol to chicken kebabs. (Lady, blink three times if you need to be fed).

5. Jab Tak Rahega Samose Mein Aaloo

Firstly, samosas come with a lot of interesting fillings like mutton keema, butter chicken, boondi and even more. They aren’t just restricted to potatoes anymore, but we’ll let this one slide considering it’s a song from the 90s. 90s Bollywood heartthrob, Juhi Chawla, and Akshay Kumar star in this weird and quirky song from the movie, Mr. And Mrs. Khiladi. The lyrics are odd, to say the least, “Jab tak rahega samose mein aaloo, chipki rahegi tujhse ye Shalu”. And well, if you can manage to decipher the meaning of that, do let us know!

Well, we can’t really say we expect better from the Hindi music industry. After all, this is the same industry that objectifies women, while praising movies like Kabir Singh and other such misogynistic films. When it comes to food, it’s best that we leave it on our plates and not use it to describe the bodies of women. Do tell us the weirdest food based item songs you’ve heard in the comment section below.
