Living a life in the limelight has its set of advantages. You get fame, status, money, power and the ability to provide your loved ones with a better standard of living. However, this also means always being in the spotlight and under media and public scrutiny. Imagine living a life where every single move you make is constantly watched. While this concept has been continuously covered humorously in various movies like The Truman Show, the fact of the matter is that it isn’t too far from the reality of life.

Bollywood actors and actresses have had to constantly watch what they say and how they behave in the eye of the public, both in the yesteryear’s and in today’s modern era. What makes it worse for the young showmen/ women of our generation is that everything can be documented and scrutinized on social media. They might put up a post meaning absolutely no harm, like most of us, but they’d be trolled for it tenfold. Vaani Kapoor is the latest victim to receive ire and online harassment from the world of social media. Vaani is a jovial young actress who stole the hearts of many with her impressive performances in movies like Shuddh Desi Romance, Befikre and recent film— War.

A few days ago, the stunning actress posted a picture of herself modeling a form-fitting crop top and a peach skirt. Knowing the netizens of this country, it wouldn’t be surprising if they trolled her for wearing ‘revealing clothes’. However, what didn’t go down well for some netizens was the fact that the top has the words ‘Hare Ram’ printed all over it. A lot of people were offended as they believed it to be blasphemous and insulting to their religious beliefs.

While a lot of people also spoke out in support of the actress and her freedom to choose whatever she wants to wear, they were drowned out by the voices of the overenthusiastic haters. The picture received negative flak online and lots of unnecessary Twitter threads calling the actress names. Many said she was disrespecting the name of Lord Ram by wearing his name on “non-traditional attire”.

After the actress was trolled brutally for a couple of hours, she took down the post from her Instagram. Unfortunately for her, the displeasure didn’t just end there. Many people took screenshots of the post and shared them on Twitter. One twitter user even shared the image on his account and tagged the Mumbai Police’s twitter handle. And some users went so far as to claim that Vaani had posted the controversial picture just a few days after the Ayodhya verdict hoping to incite some drama. Many netizens referred to her as uncultured and disrespectful. Read some of the tweets below.

This isn’t the first time Vaani Kapoor has been bullied online. When the trailer of her movie Befikre was released, she was trolled for seemingly having plastic surgery. However, the actress has denied all rumors of plastic surgery and blamed her facial changes on camera angles and the ‘freezing French air’- where the movie was shot. She had claimed that she can’t afford plastic surgery back then as she was just one-film old.

Many people spoke out about how her new look felt extremely fake, masculine and plastic compared to her soft, the girl-next-door look in her first film. Netizens believe that the actress has had multiple rounds of plastic surgery. Specifically a rhinoplasty (nose job), chin reconstruction, and lip fillers. Many people shamed the actress for her surgeries and voiced their concerns all over Twitter. Some even went so far as to Photoshop before-after pictures of the actress. She was also criticized for her seemingly stiff and emotionless performance in the trailer.

While we agree with the fact that as a celebrity, one must watch what they say/ post on social media, it is totally not okay to harass anybody online regarding their posts. Yes, freedom of speech goes both ways, but when do we start drawing the line? Moreover, calling her uncultured and mocking her for showing skin is absolutely appalling. The irony of that is the fact that Indian women in the past weren’t attacked for showing skin. If you take a look at the old paintings and statues, you’ll get to know that. And if you go to beaches in Goa and Gokarna, you will see numerous people of all ages dressed in ‘baba clothes’ which have multiple Gods’ names printed on them. When you look back at hippie culture, people wore outfits with God’s names on them all the time.

So, what changed? Why is it okay to harass a celebrity over an issue like this but not bring it up with your neighbor dresses like a sage? Are the Twitterati going to complain about and harass them as well? What’s your take on this online battle? Let us know in the comments below.
