India has been under lockdown since the 25th of March and the country has been pulling out all stops to curb the spread of the virus. And while the world is still in a state of panic due to the virus, we must stay indoors and avoid unnecessary interactions with those around us. Many places across the country have made it mandatory for people to wear face masks. However, it is important to note that unless we are dealing with a COVID infected patient, we need not purchase N95 masks as they are in limited quantities and should be saved for healthcare professionals, police, and other individuals on the front lines (1) (2).

Since not everybody can get access to a facemask, many have looked online for tutorials to make their facemasks. Like many Bollywood celebrities, The Dirty Picture actress, Vidya Balan too has been encouraging her followers to stay at home and practice social distancing. She recently shared a video on how to make a DIY face mask at home. Read on to know how you too can make your own.

DIY Facemask At Home

Vidya shared the video onto her Twitter account with the caption, “#ApnaDeshApnaMask #HomeMadeMasks P.S: Ek purani saree ko kar bahut saare masks ban sakte hain.”

Vidya began the video by asking her fans how they’re doing and saying that she hopes they remain safe during this time. In the video, the actress spoke about how easy it is to make a mask at home and how even the Prime Minister had advised all of us to wear homemade masks. Vidya explained how one could make a mask with just three things by using a random piece of cloth at home like a dupatta or a scarf and two rubber bands to hold it in place. She added that this is a very effective measure as there is a shortage of masks in the world right now and that we should make our own for this reason. She joked about how the mask looked like a piece of chocolate while she was midway through making the facemask.

Vidya has been sharing a lot of news and helpline numbers related to the COVID-19 crisis. Like many celebrities, the actress too is asking her fans to help those in need as much as they can. Earlier in March, the actress had asked her fans to donate to the Mumbai Roti Bank as they had been feeding homeless people on the streets during these troubling times. She spoke about how many daily wage laborers didn’t have the means to provide for their families during this difficult time and that we should help out in any way we can. Vidya asked her followers to contact the helpline numbers if they know of people who are in need of some food.

Something a lot of people don’t realize is that there have been many people who have been asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus. This is why it is essential for people to wear face masks when they are out in public. This is to ensure that you don’t transmit the virus to healthy individuals who might be more at risk of developing severe symptoms than you. However, buying a facemask when there is a shortage doesn’t seem like the most feasible idea. Many establishments in major cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, etc will not allow people to enter unless they were wearing face masks. This has caused many to panic as they are unable to purchase or gain access to face masks. Hence, Vidya’s DIY tutorial is easy and crucial for those looking to feel more secure (3) (4).

Even organizations like the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends cloth face coverings as they are more economical and can be washed and reused multiple times. However, the CDC does state that the cloth mask coverings should fit snugly around your face and not be loose in any manner as that would render them ineffective. Major news organizations like the BBC have also asked people to wear face masks as smaller droplets of the virus can remain suspended in the air once an infected individual has sneezed. According to a study, a single cough can spread 3000 particles into the air. For this reason, it is a safe idea to ensure you stay safe and protected. Although COVID19 droplets are heavy and stick to surfaces, they can also transfer if someone sneezes near you and you breathe in the particles. The CDC has also given recommendations on how to sew your own mask if you have the necessary equipment at home (5) (6) (7).

It is unfortunate that we have to resort to using face masks when we are out in public. However, given the fact that the virus has such a high infection rate, it is important for us to stay safe and ensure we keep those around us safe as well. Tell us if Vidya’s tutorial helped you make an effective cloth mask.
