6 Ways To Get Rid Of Razor Bumps Fast

Written by Chandrama Deshmukh  •

When waxing is not an option, it’s razor to the rescue! And while shaving has several hair-removing benefits (such as being so convenient and so much more pain-free!), it does have one major drawback – razor bumps.

For those who aren’t already aware, razor bumps basically occur in frequent shavers – it’s when hairs remain inside the tiny hair follicles and start growing into your skin. Usually, these ingrown hairs look like inflamed, red bumps, which can totally ruin the “smooth as silk” look that you’re going for. Sigh.

So, if you too have been facing trouble with these pesky red bumps, here are some great tips to getting rid of them – easily and quickly!

1. Use Some Crushed-Up Aspirin

Aspirin is a staple in every household’s medicine cabinet. It’s the go-to drug of choice when dealing with mild fevers, pain, and inflammation, but it may also be your white knight to combat those razor bumps!

All you require to do is crush up 2-3 aspirins (or more, depending upon your need) and mix them with some distilled water until it forms a paste of smooth consistency. Now, apply this paste to the regions that are inflicted with razor bumps and leave it on for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Once done, rinse with lukewarm water and you’re good to go!

The reason for this remedy’s success is all thanks to the salicylic acid content in aspirin. Salicylic acid basically helps to kill bacteria, get rid of dead skin cells, and clean out your pores.

2. Don’t Give In To The Itch!

Itching is part and parcel of any sort of inflammation, which razor bumps happen to have an abundance of. But no matter how tempting it may be to pick or scratch those itchy bumps and get some much-needed relief – please don’t give in to temptation! By no means will your razor bumps disappear if you persistently pick on them.

In fact, this is the most counterproductive thing you could do, as the more you scratch, the more inflamed your razor bumps will get. And if your nails are on the unhealthy end of the hygiene spectrum, then you can even expect your scratching to lead to an infection. Not fun.

3. Get Rid Of All Your Rusty, Old Razor Blades

You don’t have to feel ashamed, a lot of us are guilty of hoarding old, rusty razors. For some, it’s the misguided belief that they could still get a few more good shaves from their abused razor before they’re forced to purchase another one. For others, it could just be pure laziness, or heck, even sentimentality. Whatever your reason may be for holding on to that rusty ol’ razor, it doesn’t matter. Get rid of it. Like, now.

Not only do old razors lose their sharpness, thereby leading to ineffective shaving that produces more ingrown hairs and razor bumps, they also happen to have an accumulation of bacteria, which could lead to a possible infection. This will only serve to exacerbate any existing razor bumps. Hence, when shaving, always use a sharp, new blade. But if circumstances force you to utilize an old one, ensure that you sterilize it with some alcohol prior to use.

4. Make A Green Tea Or Rose Water Cold Compress

If the inflammation and itchiness is driving you nuts, relax. We have a simple solution – a natural, DIY cold compress! And the best one to counteract the inflammation while providing some much-needed soothing action would be a cold compress made of green tea or (if you’re not a tea drinker) rose water. To make these, simply soak a clean, light linen in some chilled green tea or rose water and apply it on the regions that are inflicted with razor bumps.

5. Apply Some Aloe Vera

All home remedy lovers agree on one thing – aloe vera is nature’s gift to skin! And it’s also a fantastic treatment for pesky razor bumps. Aloe vera possess anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help decrease the inflammation of your bumps.

Hence, if you’re looking for a speedy topical treatment to soothe razor bumps, simply apply some aloe vera gel on the affected regions. That being said, if you’ve never encountered aloe vera before, ensure that you do a skin patch test to check if you’re allergic.

6. Do Not Shave Every Single Day

It may sound simple enough, but you will be surprised by how many people need reminding. If you shave every single day, you will only further irritate your existing razor bumps and worse, create new ones as well. And persisting in this behavior will ensure that those angry, inflamed patches of red skin never disappear. Hence, do give your skin the chance to heal itself by giving your razor a timeout. The best option is to shave every third day.
