As much as we love the chilly breeze of winter and the hot coffees we drink in the morning to combat the cold, it really messes with our hair. One of the biggest winter nightmares is when your hair starts to shed. While 100 strands or so a day is considered an average estimate, anything more might be a problem. Nobody enjoys seeing chunks of their hair clogged into the drain. But what really causes seasonal hair fall? Well, the short answer is, harsh weather. The cold of the winter is not just harsh on your skin, which becomes drier but also rough on all types of hair and hair textures. Just like your skin that needs protection from the weather, your hair does too. You need to defend your locks from the harsh winter air, static electricity, and indoor heat. So give these nine winter hair care tips a try to see a remarkable difference in your hair:

1. Hot Oil Massage

One of the best ways to restore moisture in your dry and damaged hair is by using a hot oil-based hair treatment. Make sure that you use a lightweight formula that is enriched with argan or jojoba oil to revitalize it instantly. Apply nourishing hair oil at the hair ends daily to protect your hair and nourish it.

2. Get Trims Often

You need to trim your hair every four to eight weeks. This is the best way to maintain the health of your hair and keep it looking super fresh. This will reduce your chances of developing dry and split ends. We are not asking you to chop it off completely or make your hair short, but try to remove the potential split ends or brittle ends of your locks. It will look healthier and feel easier to manage.

3. Get Your Hair Steamed

One of the best ways to keep your hair healthy is by getting regular steams. This will strengthen and moisturize your hair. Steam is known to induce good hair health and can make your hair super silky and shiny as opposed to direct contact with boiling hot water.

4. Avoid Taking Hot Showers

Although most of us would gravitate towards taking hot showers when the temperature dips to chill. If you would like to take a hot shower, use a cap to cover your hair. Hot water can zap the moisture out of your hair and leave it looking brittle and vulnerable to breakage. You should wash your hair with lukewarm water and then run it under cool water instead.

5. Deep Condition Your Hair Once A Week

Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize! This is the name of the game in winter hair care. Make sure you add a leave-in conditioner every week to combat the effects of hot styling tools, cold winter winds, and indoor heating. Another common concurrence during the winter months is static hair.

6. Don’t Use A Blow Dryer

The best way to dry your hair is by drying it with nature’s blow dryer- the wind. Using a blow dryer will increase the chance of hair breakage and draw moisture out of it. Short on time? Take a shower in the evening and let your hair dry overnight. Embrace the texture of your natural hair and make sure that you dry it naturally in the best way you can. Heat styling can amplify the issue and suck all the moisture out of your hair strands. This, in turn, will leave it dry and damaged. Refrain from curling and straightening your hair during winter.

7. Get A Humidifier

One of the most surprising ways to fight off dry hair during the winter is by using a humidifier. Indoor heating can cause the air in your house to become dry and pull moisture out of your hair. Humidifiers can help rehydrate your hair and leave your tresses looking lustrous. It not only adds a sweet-smelling ambience to your room but adds the stripped moisture back to your hair.

8. Don’t Go Outside With Wet Hair

We bet every person has done this many times. When we are running short of time or have to get to an important appointment, we quickly tie the strands into a loose and rough ponytail and let the hair air dry outside. Can you imagine the devastating end result? Air drying indoors is much safer than doing it outside. Especially when the cold, dry winds in winters are sweeping the moisture away. Wet hair is much more vulnerable to dry hair damage, and walking outside with wet hair can cause the hair to freeze and break. While drying your hair naturally is the best, it’s also okay to dry your hair with a blow dryer rather than walking out with it wet.

9. Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often

If you are someone who tends to wash their hair daily, it’s time that you switch things up. If you overwash your hair, it can strip it off natural oils that help to keep hair protected and moisturize. This is especially bad during the winter season when those oils are required. Make sure that you extend the time between your hair washes as much as you possibly can. Wash your hair once every three to four days and use dry shampoo if your hair gets oily often. Only wash your hair daily if you work out a lot and sweat.

It is already too cold to brave yourself to a hot shower bath every day. This makes washing hair with cold water harder. Heat the water very mildly until it’s barely lukewarm if you can’t bring yourself to use cold water for your hair. Best to be on your guard in the winter months and welcome the oil massages. If you try out all of these tips, we guarantee that you will be able to keep your hair looking as fresh and healthy as it does during warmer days. Do let us know which of these tips you’ve heard before or if you’re going to try any of them in the comments below.
