The very word ‘stain’ is so disturbing, isn’t it? There’s nothing more dreadful than spilling something over your brand-new shirt or clothes. Or the instance when you had just laid out an expensive rug in the hallway for a house party to give the best impression of your house and just before the guests arrived, your pet mark its territory. Sure, you can laugh at this, but you also know how painful it is to clear the stains after you have had that hearty laugh.

Grass stains, wine stains (the red one, of course), oil stains, food stains, grease stains — oh we’ve seen them all, haven’t we? Stains are worrisome. But fret not people, we asked our friends, our neighbors, our neighbor’s aunts, and everybody else about how to treat stains. And here we have the best of tried and tested methods that work on those stubborn stains. Read and make the most of it.

Wine Stains

  • On Clothing: As much as red wine is considered as the classiest drink of indulgence; wine stains are not all that classy or gentle. And if you happen to have some red wine stains on your clothing, here’s what you should be doing. Hold your stained fabric under running cold water with the unstained side facing up. This will forcefully push the stain outside. Another trick is to make a solution of cold water and oxygen bleach. Soak the stained garment in it for an hour. Remove and check if the stain exists or not and then wash as usual.

  • On Marble Or Granite Countertops: Make a paste with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Now spread this mixture on the stained area. It needs to be at least as thick as a one-fourth-inch measurement. Let this spread stay on the affected area for at least 24 hours. After that, with the help of a cloth wipe the dried mixture off. You’ll see that the stain has vanished.
  • On Upholstery And Rugs: For your rugs to recover from a drunken mess, dab them with a solution of bleach and water alternatively. After which, dab some hot water onto it. The last step would be to blot up the wet area with a clean towel. You’ll see that the stain has vanished in a jiffy.

Ink Stains

  • On Clothing: Ink is what gives color to your words, and it also gives you nightmares if it happens to leave a mark on your clothes. To remove ink stains from your garments we recommend dipping cotton swabs in some rubbing alcohol. Then, gently running them over the stain, moving your hand from the edge of the stain to its center. And remember to change cotton swabs every time you notice that the swab has absorbed the ink.
  • On Marble Or Granite: For this, use the same technique as above. Just make sure that you don’t leave alcohol on the granite to dry out as that’s going to create a different type of stain then.

  • On Upholstery And Rugs: Rub the stained areas with alcohol. Once you’ve seen that the stain has vanished, pour some water on the affected area and allow it to dry naturally. This will help to get rid of the alcohol odor.

Grease Stains

  • On Clothing: Getting rid of grease stains can be very frustrating. It gets very oily and messy. But, here’s the trick to get rid of them. Make a solution of vinegar and water, taking both of them in equal measure. Apply this solution over the stained garment liberally. After ten minutes, wash it off with the usual laundry soap. Repeat this again if the stain doesn’t come off on the first try.
  • On Upholstery And Rugs: The best way is to simply wash it with laundry soap or detergent and water. And if the stain still hasn’t gone, only then use some white vinegar and rub it over the stained area.

Blood Stains

On Clothing: Whenever our nose tends to start bleeding due to body heat or due to minute injuries, it’s our clothes that take the first hit. In such cases, it’s recommended to flush the stained area with cold water and not hot water. This is because the hot water will end up cooking up the protein present in the blood which will make it really difficult for us to remove the stain. Treat it with some heavy duty detergent and slightly work it up into the fibers using a soft-bristled brush. Leave it for about 15 minutes and then wash it with cold water. If the stain is still there, then soak the garment in a solution of water and oxygen bleach for four hours and then wash.

On Upholstery And Rugs: This has some steps, so pay attention to it. Use a toilet paper or paper towel and blot up the moisture from the stained towel. Once you notice that the stain is dried, use a soft-bristled brush to remove the crusted blood particles. Then vacuum the area. After this, mix a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid detergent in three cups of cold water. Dip a brush or a white cloth in this and rub it on the stain from the edges to the center. When you find that the stain has gone. Use a paper towel to absorb all the soap that’s spread on the rug. Allow the carpet to dry on its own and then vacuum it one last time.
