What Happens To Your Body When You Lose Extra Weight

Written by Shivani K  •

Finally, you have done it! After all those multitudinous months of dieting, exercising, and saying no to your favorite happy hours, you’ve finally managed to shed those kilos. You have slowly begun to not just look great but also feel great, like a whole new reincarnation in terms of your body and mind. Weighing yourself doesn’t feel like a nightmare anymore. You are just beaming with pride.

But, mind you! Shedding that lingering stubborn fat isn’t a piece of cake. Saying no to those freshly brewed beers and appetizing chicken wings (that you have always loved to gorge on) is difficult. But, suppressing these craving can actually be very beneficial (1).

And if you have achieved a fitter, healthier body, you need to encourage people around you to do the same. Let them know that being obese or overweight is one of the major threats to our health — the main reason behind type 2 diabetes and heart ailments (2). Having said that, let’s take a look at the positive effects of weight loss on our health.

1. Your Teeth Stay White And Healthy

Obesity could lead to a condition called periodontitis — wherein the tissues around our teeth develop inflammation. Studies show that the younger generation which is exposed to obesity has higher chances of being affected with periodontitis (3). Fortunately, one way to snail pace the growth of periodontitis is to follow healthy eating habits and engage in physical activities.

2. Joint Pains Vanish Away

It’s common sense! If you are overweight, it becomes difficult for your bones to carry the weight of your body. They become weak and start to ache. Losing those extra kilos and following workout routines that strengthen your bones will reduce your joint pains and also lessen the chances of you developing osteoarthritis (4). In fact, studies say that even when an elderly person loses some weight, the joint pains reduce by four times from the actual pain (5).

3. It Becomes Easier For A Woman To Conceive

Body weight plays an important role when it comes to a healthy menstrual cycle of a woman. Even the slightest increase in weight can get your menstruation cycles to go topsy-turvy. This leads to irregular periods that, in turn, can affect your chances of being pregnant as infertility kicks in (6). Caution! A woman shouldn’t lose weight and become skinny either. Maintaining the optimal weight should be the goal.

4. Reduced Risk Of Contracting Cardiovascular Diseases

The heart is the most important organ in our body, right? It supplies oxygen to the rest of our body parts to carry out their everyday functions. Having a bulky body can be a hindrance to our heart’s functioning mechanisms. In fact, it’s proven that an obese person has higher chances of developing cardiovascular ailments than a person with a normal weight (7). No medication can reduce the chances of contracting a heart disease. So, the best (and the only) way out of this is to start working on our body weight, keeping it optimal.

5. Your Skin Is Healthier

An overdose of fat in our bodies can hinder the natural processes of the skin. Imagine your skin breathing in just oils and fats – that made you cringe, didn’t it? Extra weight attracts a lot of evil BFFs and skin diseases are one of those. Scientists have proven that obese patients have dry skin as the skin tissues are damaged to the epidermal level (8).

Have you heard the phrase “be comfortable in your own skin”? Well, that applies to our body being comfortable with our skin too. Follow exercise routines and diets that actually make you fit and make you feel beautiful from within. Never resort to trends when it comes to health. Having a healthy body will keep your skin lively and free from allergies.

6. The Hair As Well As The Nails Become Stronger

Women fancy beautiful hair and manicured nails. An easy way to achieve it is by being healthy. Eating right will provide the essential nutrients to our scalp that encourage healthy hair growth. Chipped or cracked nails are our body’s way of communicating the lack of iron in our body (9). So, fixing our diet and metabolism will leave us with a healthy body that facilitates healthy hair and nails.

7. You Have The Right Circadian Rhythm

If a person is obese, their sleep cycle goes haywire. Only a healthy person whose body is well nourished, and has received a good amount of exercise, can sleep well. Sleep apnea is a condition which is becoming very prevalent these days, especially among the overweight (it has increased by almost 45%) (10). In this condition, patients run out of breath for a few seconds while sleeping. Maintaining an ideal weight can reduce the sleep apnea symptoms in us.

8. You Live A Happy, Prolonged Life

We all know that we, humans, are all mortal beings and we live every day to the fullest. But, being obese does not just hinder the quality of our lives, but also leaves a negative impact on our life expectancy. A study says that the mortality of a body depends on its body mass index (BMI); therefore, make sure that your BMI levels are under control (11). The healthier your body is, the longer will you live.
