Written by Indrani Karmakar  •

As a true Potterhead, you must have at least once tried on an old hat and pretended to be put in a Hogwarts house. Like the wand and cloak, the houses are an inseparable part of the franchise that has caught our attention since we first saw the movie. Did you also think for yourself, if you were actually a part of the school, which house would you be a part of? Gryffindor

“You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart”
— The Sorting Hat

Congratulations, brave one! You have been put into Gryffindor! Founded by Godric Gryffindor, a true Gryffindor possesses the most valued characteristics such as courage, loyalty, chivalry, and determination. Gryffindor corresponds to the element of fire, and this is why the colors associated with it are scarlet and gold. (We definitely love the color combination, and it suits our scarves perfectly!) They are also exceptionally stubborn, but sometimes that helps them get their way! The house contributed to Dumbledore’s Army in the Order of the Phoenix, and we really appreciate their guts for standing up against the forces of the Dark Lord. As a Gryffindor, you never step back from taking a stand, and that is why heroes emerge from Gryffindor. If you have read the book, one thought that would have kept you awake is why Neville Longbottom was placed in Gryffindor when he showed all the symptoms of Hufflepuff. The answer was revealed at last when even after the prominent leader, Harry, was lifeless in Hagrid’s arm, Neville did not give in before he destroyed the final Horcrux. However, not every Gryffindor is spotless at heart. While we had heroes like Harry and Dumbledore, we also had people siding with evil like Peter Pettigrew.

Hufflepuff

“You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil.”
— The Sorting Hat

If your information source is Harry Potter movies only, you probably have a derogatory notion about this house. The first impression we get about the house is the least favorite, all thanks to Malfoy’s statement, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, “Imagine being in Hufflepuff. I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?” So if you are confused about what you did to be sorted in Hufflepuff, we are here to reveal why it is the house anyone would be lucky to be put in. Founded by Helga Hufflepuff, Hufflepuff is a house full of patience, hard work, dedication, loyalty, and fair play. Badger being the emblematic animal, yellow and black colors represent the house. Hufflepuff has brave members like Cedric Diggory, and honestly, this house has the least evil members emerging out to cause trouble in the future. Their overlooked diamond in the rough quality is a real all-rounder. They have a better grasp of nature, herbology, and animal studies. They are also modest, kind and keep their talents and house possessions to themselves. If you, by any chance, got the impression that Gryffindor is brave and Hufflepuff isn’t, you couldn’t be more wrong. A Hufflepuff will never put themselves first and will save you even at the cost of their life. So now who is happy to be a part of Hufflepuff, eh?

Ravenclaw

“Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.”
— The Sorting Hat

If you are placed in Ravenclaw, one thing is for sure, you are witty, so cheers to that! Ravenclaws are valued for their intelligence, knowledge, curiosity, creativity, and wit. They are very intuitive and can calculate your moves five steps ahead of you. It is a blessing to apply the right spell at the right time. If you were thinking, who could be more intelligent than Hermione and why was she put in Gryffindor then, it does not always have to be bookish intelligence. Sometimes it is the emotional and curious intelligence that counts. The emblematic animal of Ravenclaw is an eagle, and the colors are bronze and blue. Ravenclaw corresponds to the element of air. Unlike other houses, the members of Ravenclaw enter their dorm by solving a riddle. That is proof of how brilliant the house is. However, every house has a drawback, and Ravenclaw can be too apparent, like Professor Lockhart or Quirinus Quirrell.

Slytherin

“Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.”
— The Sorting Hat

Let us begin with – not all Slytherins are death eaters. Founded by Salazar Slytherin, the emblematic animal is a serpent, and its colors are emerald green and silver. The common notion that Slytherins are powerful sorcerers waiting to devour you is just a misconception. A sorting hat chooses a Slytherin with traits like ambition, leadership, self-preservation, cunningness, and resourcefulness. Slytherin is goal-oriented and knows precisely what they want and how to get it done. In a way, they are never without a plan. If you have read the book thoroughly, you will know that the one thing common between Slytherin and Gryffindor is that they are rule-breakers. While the Gryffindor’s are easily caught in the act, Slytherin will carefully do it under the radar without anyone knowing anything. Slytherin is also very haughty, self-centered, and judgmental. They have a huge ego and see to it that they are the best in the room. This has probably been best portrayed by Malfoy and his family. Even if you feel Slytherin is always linked with lousy energy, their cunningness speaks intelligence. They are also resourceful and are quick and efficient with their spells. At the end of the day, Slytherins are also loyal, and no matter what they side with, they will never leave it halfway.

So, did you get the house you wanted? Who was the character who made you fall in love with the book from every house? Can’t wait to hear from you in the comments section! Take care! (Mischief managed)
