Did you ever notice the small strip of cloth that is attached to your newly purchased shirt? Ever wondered why it is there?

It is usually found in trousers and shirts. I used to think that the manufacturers attached it so that if the shirt gets torn or damaged at some point, you can sew on this extra scrap of cloth to cover it up. This way, you will not have to search for the same fabric and material in the market. If you do not get it at all, you will have no other option than to dump it.

Well, most of us think the same, I suppose. However, it is not so. Then, what is the reason to include this strip of cloth?

Any guesses?

Quite often, it happens that you buy a new dress, and you love it a lot. But after a wash, the cloth is not the same as it was before washing. Either it will shrink, or bleed color, or the fabric will expand. And then, you start cursing the brand for cheating you. But, you cannot blame the manufacturers alone for the spoilt fabric. Here’s why.

That extra scrap of cloth is there so that you get an idea of the fabric used and its nature. It is attached to the shirt so that you get an idea of how to wash it. Some clothes require soft washing, while some others need hard washing, such as trousers or jeans. While some fabrics can be easily washed with only washing powder, some fabrics require starch or bleaching powder. The tips to wash the clothes are already mentioned on their label. You can test it by first washing that small piece of cloth before washing the dress.

Isn’t it a good idea to wash the sample cloth first rather than spoiling the entire outfit? So, the next time you see that extra scrap of cloth, do not throw it away!
