Why Do You Look Better In A Mirror Than A Photograph

Today, while I was getting ready for office, I looked in the mirror, and I was looking really good. My hair was perfectly falling on my shoulders, and there was nothing wrong with my face too. “I look great!”, I told myself. And then, I took a selfie to update my profile picture on Instagram. Later, when I checked the picture, I was horrified at how I looked.

I checked myself in the mirror again, and I looked perfect. Then, why was I looking different in the picture? My mind was filled with a number of questions. Who is lying? The mirror or the photograph?

I started searching for reasons for the difference, and this is what I came up with.

We’re actually addicted to watching ourselves in the mirror, and whenever we look into the mirror, we see our inverse image. And after looking at ourselves inversely in the mirror, we get used to a face that is staring back at us. That’s why we prefer the image that we have been seeing since long with the flipped facial imperfections.

Now, when we see the same face in a photograph, i.e. the unflipped version of our face, we find it a bit odd and unusual. It looks strange to us, and hence, we feel that we look better in the mirror than in the photograph. It’s the mirror that lies and not your camera!

The next question that arises now is how to get better pictures? The solution is to start taking Snapchat selfies or use apps that do not flip the image to its inverse and give you the type of pictures that you love and wish for!

Now that the big mystery is solved, happy clicking!
