Do you often find yourself a victim of those horrid hiccups? Of course, we all get hiccups every now and then, and we are also aware of the comments that follow the occurrence of hiccups. Some of them are:

“Someone might be missing you badly.”

“Someone is bitching about you.”

And the solution? Very very simple! Just call out the names of the person you think might be missing you or talking about you.

And what do you do then? You believe in the old wives’ tale and you start calling out the long list of names of your friends, relatives, your crushes, your enemies, and God-knows-who all. And what if your hiccups stop after calling out the name of a person whom you never thought could miss you? You are exhilarated – who cares about the hiccups?

But even after calling out the names, what if your hiccups won’t stop? You try all kinds of weird things that you have heard about earlier. Drinking water was a common and well-known solution you might have heard about, but did you ever try what this gentleman is trying to do?

Well, science has answers for all such superstitions. I agree, hiccups can put you in an uncomfortable situation. But there is one thing you need to know – hiccups are not at all life-threatening. They are usually caused by spasms in the diaphragm. A few factors that cause hiccups are smoking, alcohol, a bloated stomach, stress, excitement, or sudden change of temperature inside and outside the stomach.

They just last for a few minutes and subside automatically. So, trying all the home remedies for your satisfaction is actually a waste of time as none of them work. They stop naturally on their own so no need of drinking water or holding your breath.

And regarding the belief that a person is cursing you or missing you if you are getting hiccups, no person in the world would have stopped hiccuping if that was the case!

There was a guy named Charles Osbourne who reportedly hiccuped for 68 years. Yes, you read that right! He hiccuped for 68 years, starting from 1922 till 1990, but he continued to live a normal life. He married twice and had a total of eight children.

Thus, hiccups are a natural occurrence and will be gone in a few minutes. And unless you are another Charles Osbourne, there is nothing wrong with you and your body.
