6 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Washing Your Hair In The Shower

Written by Indrani Karmakar, BA Hons  •

Nothing beats the rejuvenating powers of a warm bath after a long tiring day. A good soak in the bathtub may be just what your fatigued body needs, yet it might not be a good idea to wash your hair in it too. The reason is, shower water is typically too hot for your hair needs, and the practice of washing it with hot water can be detrimental to the health of your locks over time. Ideally, you should rinse your hair with cooler water and do the washing in the sink, where the temperature can be precisely controlled, for the best results. We decided to go even further into the potential downsides of washing hair in the shower and the factors that led us to this conclusion. Read on to know them all.

1. It May Cause Hair To Dry Out

A hot steaming shower may be the best way to unwind after a long day, but you can only imagine what it might do to your hair. The hot water from your bath may dry out your hair and make it seem brittle like straw, the same way styling products can harm your hair. While washing your hair, it’s best to use water that is just slightly warmer than room temperature. To do this, you can keep your hair tied up or use a shower cap for your bath. And once you are done, simply bend your hair down over the sink and wash the hair with water of a lower temperature than your bath water.

2. It May Lead To Hair Thinning

Washing your hair regularly in hot water can cause the hair strands to become brittle and break easily. The pores on the scalp open up when you use hot water to wash your hair. This further weakens the hold of your hair on the roots and increases your risk of hair loss. Warm water also strips the hair of its protective oils and weakens the keratin. The higher water temperature of a shower is a major contributor to hair breakage and thinning. Make sure you use lower temperature water for your hair wash and seal the hair cuticles at last with cold water. Also, apply a hair serum to keep the health of your hair optimum.

3. It May Give You An Itchy Scalp

Hot water is ideal for washing away grime and product buildup, yet it also tears away naturally occurring oils, leaving the scalp’s skin dry and irritated. Your scalp is protected from microorganisms by an epidermal lipid layer of fatty tissue. If you wash your hair in hot water, you risk having this protective layer stripped away, which can lead to an itchy, irritated scalp. Make sure you massage your scalp the right way and supplement it with oils and serums to keep your scalp from getting dry and irritated.

If you recently got your hair colored, your hairdresser probably told you not to wash it in hot water. Hot water not only causes your hair to dry out but also opens the cuticle, enabling the color molecules to escape. Rinse your hair out with lower-temperature water to prolong the life of your new hair color. Also, make sure you use specific color-friendly shampoo and conditioner to enhance the color and keep your hair from drying out.

5. It May Cause Dandruff

If your scalp is prone to dandruff, even on chilly days it’s best to not wash your hair with warm water after you’ve used shampoo. Dandruff is typically caused by a dry scalp, which is made worse by frequent hot showers. Make sure you monitor the water temperature and do not use warm water to wash your hair. You can also invest in home remedies and products that give an effective fight to dandruff without ruining the health of your hair.

6. It May Cause Frizz

To control unruly frizz, you may need to resort to the usage of specialized anti-frizz products. Taking hot showers is a common practice, but it can dry out your hair and cause it to become  frizzier than usual. The swelling of the cuticle causes your hair to frizz out in every direction, which can be controlled by using bath water at a lower temperature.

Even though washing your hair in warm water doesn’t feel harmless, it is not really so. In the long run, your hair may thin out and even fall because of the continuous use of warm water. So what is your trick to keeping your hair safe from your bath water? Let us know in the comments section!
