Sitting on the floor while eating is considered an ancient Indian tradition that has its roots in Ayurveda and yoga. Though many of us prefer eating at the dining table, it doesn’t turn out to be the best thing for our health. When we sit down on the floor to eat, we usually cross our legs and then sit. This position or posture is termed Padmasana or Sukhasana in yoga. Sitting in this posture has a number of health benefits.

Let’s check them out.

1. It Improves Digestion.

When we sit on the floor and eat, we constantly (and naturally) bend forward to eat and go back while swallowing the food. This back and forth movement activates the muscles of the abdomen, which in turn increases the secretion of stomach acids, making the digestion process easier.

2. It Helps In Weight Loss.

When we sit on the floor and eat, our mind and body focus more on the food we eat. Thus, we eat slowly, and this gives our stomach and brain enough time to pass the signal of feeling full and prevent you from overeating.

3. It Helps In Relaxing Your Mind And Calming The Nerves.

The Padmasana or Sukhasana helps in calming tensed nerves, thus relaxing your mind and body.

4. It Improves Your Posture.

When we sit cross-legged on the floor, our posture is automatically corrected as we sit straight by pushing our shoulders back and lengthening our spine. It helps you lessen back pain caused due to a bad posture.

5. It Helps You Live A Longer Life.

This might sound a bit far-fetched, but it’s true. A study published in the Journal of Preventive Cardiology states that people who sit in the Padmasana are more likely to live a longer life.

With so many health benefits, who will want to sit on a chair and have food ever again? So, ditch your dining table and start sitting on the floor to eat food.
