You might be wondering why you should take pictures of your hotel room. Is it for your security? But how does taking a picture of your hotel room ensure one’s security?
Well, you should do this for the countless number of people who have unfortunately been trapped in the web of human trafficking.
With so many young and underage girls becoming victims of human trafficking and sex slavery, a few aggressive measures had to be taken to stop such crimes. One such measure is the invention of the app called TraffickCam.
It is a free app that is available for Android phones, iPhones, and iPads. This app is for people who travel and stay in hotels. All they need to do is click four pictures of the hotel room where they are staying and upload it along with the room number. These pictures automatically get saved in their database.
Abby Stylianou, Washington University Researcher and TraffickCam developer, told Fox2now in an interview, “You just enter your hotel room and your room number. You take four pictures, and you submit them to the website. And, then, those become the part of the pipeline that law enforcement can use to track down where the victims are being trafficked.”
This happened when an American police department was looking for ways to end the sex trafficking of young girls and they approached a non-profitable organization. It was when the police showed the picture of the hotel room in which the victim was trapped to one of its employees that the breakthrough took place. The employee knew where that hotel was located. This led to the discovery of this method of locating the victims.
When you upload the pictures of the room on that website, they are cross-checked with the photographs of the victims of sex slavery.
When the app was introduced, many people from across the world took the initiative and uploaded the pictures of their hotel rooms. Soon, the database had over a million pictures, which really helped them in locating the victims.
Even you can be a part of this and add the pictures of your hotel room to the database. Who knows, your pictures may help in saving a life.
