As web shows are gaining popularity in recent times due to the pandemic. The best thing about this is that there have been plenty of women-centric and progressive shows that are released on OTT platforms. As the audience, we are now getting to watch shows that are more progressive and modern, pushing for a more inclusive dialogue for women. While many Indian TV shows are centered around women, they are often filled with unnecessary drama and weird editing (we’re looking at you, Ekta Kapoor). Web shows give content creators the ability to put out good content and shift the narrative from lousy “masala” plots to good storylines. Since web shows revolving around the lives of women are becoming increasingly popular, we’ve decided to round up the list with nine of our favorite female-friendly web shows:

1. Delhi Crime

Delhi Crime recently made history after becoming the first Indian show to win an international Emmy Award for best drama series. The show has a star cast of Shefali Shah, Adil Hussain, Rasika Dugal, and many more. It is based on the horrific December 2012 Delhi rape case that sent shockwaves across not just the entire country but the world as a whole. The show’s gripping storyline will leave you clinging to your seat.

2. Pushpavalli

Pushpavalli is a hilarious comedy-drama and turns the tail of the common ideology that showcases the idea that only men can be stalkers. The show follows Sumukhi Suresh’s character, who plays Pushpavalli, and follows her story as she moves to a new city to woo the man she desires. The show is hilarious in its treatment of characters, and every character on the show is unique and humorous in their own way.

3. “She”

“She” is a show covering the life of a tough-as-nails police officer by the name of Bhumika Pardeshi. The storyline involved her going undercover as a prostitute and trying to infiltrate and disrupt a crime ring. It is up to Bhumika to capture the drug lord who is planning to attack the city she loves.

4. 4 More Shots Please

4 More Shots Please is a show that showcases the glitzy and glamorous side of Mumbai city, and it revolves around a group of four unique women and their joy for life. The show covers heavy topics like love, friendship, unplanned pregnancies, gender and orientation, and other things that are often not discussed in the general public.

5. Masaba Masaba

Masaba Masaba follows the hectic life of fashion designer Masaba Gupta and her super cool, National Award-winning mother, Neena Gupta. The show is a hilarious take on Masaba’s life, and we get to watch Masaba through numerous hiccups and fashion blunders as well as a confusing love life. The show is a humorous take on Masaba Gupta’s real life in the fashion world, and the adorable dynamic that she shares with her mother is super fun to watch.

6. Aarya

Aarya marked Sushmita Sen’s debut into the world of online web shows and covered the story of a stay-at-home mother whose husband is shot to death in their driveway. It is up to Sushmita’s character to uncover the truth behind who killed him and find out what he was actually doing under the guise of his pharmaceutical business.

7. Made In Heaven

Directed by the legendary Zoya Akhtar, Made In Heaven is about two wedding planners, Karan and Tara, and their attempts to give their clients what they want and plan for fairytale weddings. As audience members, we get to see the harsh side of the Indian society and how people tend to have highly conservative and unrealistic expectations from women even in this seemingly modern era. The show also shows that women too aren’t saintly creatures and how even they are capable of manipulating and hurting the people around them.

8. Churails

The ZEE5 Pakistani show involves four women who form an agency to catch husbands who cheat. After watching this show, you will understand the extent of how much misogyny exists around us and the extent to which we have normalized it. The show became the talk of the town for its treatment of fidelity and other sensitive matters.

9. Kaafir

In Kaafir, Dia Mirza plays Kainaz, a woman from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir who accidentally lands up on the Indian side of the border. The show is a story of betrayal, love, and separation and is a total tear-jerker. Very few shows are ready to take on the sensitive topics related to Kashmir and its current state, and it’s incredibly bold of the filmmakers to take on this topic.

There are tonnes of women-centric shows available online for your viewing pleasure. All you have to do is be open to browsing a bit and taking suggestions from friends. Do tell us which of these shows you’ve already watched and which ones are going on your watchlist, in the comment section below.
