If one is asked to sum up the zeitgeist of the second decade of 21st Century in one word it would be – appearances. We are obsessed with appearances, as it is evident with the multiple Insta-stories, Facebook pictures, and the never-ending Snapchats that flood the cyberspace with every passing second. We live our lives online instead of IRL. This is the mantra of our generation. And there is nothing wrong with it, the 70s had rock and roll, 80s had pop music and Madonna, we have Instagram and Snapchat.

Since we put in so much effort to create our perfect online lives, it’s no wonder we obsess over every single detail of those pictures that we put up for the world to see. Every curve, every contour of those pictures has to be perfect. Candid shots are immaculately contrived, and that’s just how it is. What if I told you there’s one detail that has escaped your attention, and this detail actually contributes a lot to the visuals of your pictures.

I am talking about the color that you wear in those pictures. Never noticed it, did you? Turns out there are a few colors which can mark the quality of your pictures. Unlike classic colors like red or black, these colors don’t translate well on screen. What are these colors?

Turns out the worst colors you could wear in photos are white and pastels. These colors have the tendency to wash you out. But fear not, we are here to help you get the perfect shot by making these colors work for you. You can do so by wearing makeup in colors which will make you pop on screen. It will create a nice contrast between the dull whites and pastels, and your exuberant, photogenic self.

If you happen to go to a place where you are expecting to take a few photos, it would be better if you opt for solid colors instead of busy prints and patterns. However, do note that sometimes it can be quite difficult to adjust the contrast between very bright colors on the camera so it would be better if you opt for them in single solid pieces.

Now that we have ruled out the colors that will make you look dull and a dud in photos, the question arises what colors do work well in photos? The colors that can spruce up your images are deep maroons and reds; teal and turquoise also have a great screen presence.Other colors like shades in the blue-green color family, deep greens, and piercing blues are universally acknowledged to be flattering on all body types.

If bright colors are not your style and you prefer something more understated, you can opt for neutrals. In this, gray is your best bet. You would be surprised to know that it works better than the all-time classic — black. A black and white combo can offer too much contrast. Instead, you could opt for earth-toned and warm browns. Bright rose-pink tones and corals are some of the other options that work well.

  1. If you are posing for a couple photograph or a having an official group picture taken do not go for matching outfits, too much of the same color can be an overpowering visual. Instead, choose colors that complement each other.
  1. Factor in your background while selecting outfits for a photo shoot. Colors which might pop against a barren wall might not work that great in a crowded street. Especially if you plan on wearing a pattern such as stripes. You don’t want to resemble the Zebra crossing, do you?
  1. Wearing loose and baggy clothing is also a big no-no. While you should opt for comfortable clothing, baggy clothing is not only going to make you look shabby. It is also going to make you appear boxy. On the other hand, fitted clothing is going to make you look well put together and polished.
