“Mirror on the wallHere we are againThrough my rise and fallYou’ve been my only friend”
Who doesn’t love looking in the mirror? Even if you don’t, I’m sure you have heard the track by Lil Wayne and Bruno Mars — “Mirror”.In the track, a glimpse of which is quoted above, the singers speak about how the mirror is their best friend.
But, for me, a mirror is something that I cannot trust. Because a mirror can’t really show you the right path when you’re heading the wrong way. Of course, it’s going to help you put on that perfect winged eyeliner, smoothen your lipstick perfectly well, and help you dress your hair right. However, could it tell you if there’s anything going wrong with you apart from the external flaws? The answer is definitely a deafening no! If the Mirror could hear me, I have a couple of things to tell the mirror:
Dear Mirror, You’re Only Going To Show Me How I Look Superficially
So, what special are you going to show me today? Are you going to tell me how attractive I look? Are you going to help me to get my curls right? Are you going to show me the light freckle that becomes prominent every time the sun’s rays hit my face? Are you going to show all that I am? Or are you going to show me more than I am?
No, you can’t, dear Mirror! You can’t tell me the secrets of the world that are hidden from me. Neither can you understand why I hide certain secrets of mine from the world around me. You’re only going to help me know what’s wrong on the surface of my body. You might help me identify if my smile is brighter or if my frown is deeper but that is all that you’re going to tell me and nothing more.
Dear Mirror, You Can Be An Obstacle Too
Are you going to talk to me about my weaknesses? Oh dear, will you just point out those crooked teeth of mine, or will you help me realize that the fine lines on my face are a result of my stress? Are you going to highlight my facial hair and make me feel embarrassed about it when I shouldn’t really be? Or will you help me build my confidence in spite of how I look — good or bad? Or will you just let me sulk in depression over my appearance? Will you point out that my lips have gone pale because of a deficiency in my body? Are you going to make me feel bad about how I look? Or will you show me my scars?
Oh, dear Mirror! Don’t make me feel bad about how I look, for I might start avoiding you in my life.
Dear Mirror, I’m Scared To Look Too Deep Into You
So tell me, Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, what’s my dearest dream of all? When I get closer to you, are you going to tell me how I can’t fulfill my dreams? Or will you show me a path towards them? Are you going to show how my stomach has become flat these days or will you highlight how snug the jeans have become around my fat thighs? There you go, I’m looking at you closely, and it’s like taking a zoomed-in look at myself. Are you going to show me my muscles and direct my attention towards how strong I have become? Or are you going to show how weak of a human I am? Will you reflect the silent battles that I fight every day?
Maybe, you will just tell me that I’m a weak human, dear Mirror. Therefore, I’m scared now. I’m very scared to look at you too closely.
Dear Mirror, In Spite Of The Odds, I Still Trust You
Do you want to know why? My relationship with you is that of a love-hate. As much as you show me my flaws as they are, you motivate me to better myself by working on them. If it wasn’t for you, how would I know what made me look bad?
Sure, you make me see how I appear to others and you also show me my own reflection. And when I see that reflection, my heart tells me I’m much more than what I can see. You’re more of a self-analysis tool through which I see what’s good in me and what’s bad. I know I’m much more than what you show me to be. I’m much more than the scars on my skin, I’m much more than the loose fat around my tummy, I’m much more than the reflection of me in you. In short, I know for a fact that I’m much more than what you or the world keeps giving me credit for.
