Obesity has become one of the biggest challenges today. It is affecting people worldwide, posing great health risks, in addition to the extra weight being a problem in itself. And if we are not careful, it would put our lives in danger as well.

On that note, we have got the GM diet plan – something that has been making rounds on the internet as one of the best diet plans for weight loss. In this post we talk about the diet plan in detail, and how you can follow it to get the best benefits!

GM Diet Plan – An Overview

General Motors, the American corporate giant that builds cars, has created a worldwide phenomenon by introducing the General Motors Diet plan, more popularly known as the GM Diet. This was mainly devised keeping in mind the needs of the employees of General Motors and their families. It was field tested at the Johns Hopkins Research Centre and thereafter secured the approval for distribution from the Board of Directors on August 15, 1985. This entails a wellness program designed to cleanse the system so that one can experience a change in their attitudes and emotions in addition to the weight loss it brings about.

This diet can be followed by any person of any age. This raging phenomenon claims to make a person lose up to 8 kilograms in one week of following a miracle diet. But does it?

I have to confess that I am a bit on the plumper side and would like nothing more than to get those extra kilos off my body. I have tried exercise, yoga, Pilates, diets and what not. Sadly, my body has a mind of its own. It doesn’t seem to want to lose weight. Well actually, I don’t want to lose weight either. It’s the bulk I am more worried about. I do not want to be affected by any nasty disease due to those extra kilos. So when I heard of the GM diet, as usual, I was eager to try it out. Millions of people around the world claim to have benefited from this weight loss diet program. People say that unlike some complicated diet plans, this is doable and which is why, so many vouch for it. After reading this, I clearly saw a silver lining in the clouds.

GM Diet Chart: The Beginning:

The GM diet is a week-long diet with a specific food intake for each of the seven days. If followed exactly, the GM diet claims to make the follower lose 5-8 kilos in the duration of the diet. Moreover, the GM diet is said to be safe and one can try it without the fear of complications. It helps to flush out all the impurities from your system so that you experience a sense of overall well-being and good health.

It is claimed that once the diet is over, that is, after seven days the person will feel a lot lighter as his weight goes down. He or she will be high on energy and will be endowed with a positive approach towards life. The trick of the GM diet is to not go hungry but to fill yourself with so much food that you don’t go hungry at all.

My curiosity was further aroused. This is a diet in which we actually eat! It’s a diet which doesn’t make us starve! I had never heard of this before. Hence, I surely wanted to try it out as soon as possible. So I began my preparation. So let’s read about the procedure on how to lose weight in 7 days.

Note: While following this diet plan, one has to completely abstain from alcohol.

1. GM Diet – Day One:

The first day of the GM Diet is your preparation for the upcoming program that you have enrolled yourself in. Day one is an all fruits day. The GM Diet Chart instructed me to eat all the fruits we possibly can with the exception of bananas. Any fruit can be consumed any time except bananas. The suggestion was to intake more of watermelon and cantaloupe. Also, we were supposed to drink 8-12 glasses of water throughout the day. If one feels hungry, that person is not doing the diet properly. Moreover, it is suggested that if one consumes just melons on the first day of the diet, one can lose about a kilogram of weight which is massive!

I followed day one to the T. I crammed myself with fruits. I had oranges, papaya, watermelon, cantaloupe, pomegranate, apples, peaches, pears, strawberries, custard apples and all else. And of course, water as advised. I did not experience hunger. Whenever I was hungry, I had more fruits. And thus went day one, peacefully.

2. GM Diet – Day Two:

Day two was an all vegetables day. We could eat any cooked and uncooked vegetables of our choice. Make sure to use no oil while cooking the vegetables. In fact, there is no limit on the type or amount of vegetables you can eat! My day happily started with a large boiled potato (for the complex carbohydrates it contains) for breakfast. And again, 8-12 glasses of water throughout the day.

By day two, I was feeling very enthusiastic. I had not experienced any hunger the day before. So I was pretty sure I could manage day two as well. I started off with the boiled potato. It was funny having the potato with nothing, but I somehow got it down. The rest of the day I spent eating veggies. I downed cucumber, carrots uncooked as well as boiled, boiled beans, raw lettuce, boiled bottle guard and water. By evening I was feeling a bit uncomfortable. The fiber in the vegetables had me rushing to the toilet again and again. But ultimately my digestive system was being cleaned up. So I was fine with it. Again, no hunger on day two.

  • http://www.stylecraze.com/members/kaartikasharma/ Kaartika

Too bad it didn’t work out as promised. But 3 Kgs in a week is still a pretty good sign. Let me try it out in January. Also do you not feel any giddiness when you do it?

that is, when you don’t eat rice which contain essential daily carb intake, will it not cause hungriness and giddiness? Are the fruits, vegetables sufficient to last you through the day and the week?

Sorry, just curious and want to know if there were any side effects?

    • http://www.stylecraze.com/members/ramyaveerubhottla/ rmyah v

      Hi Kaartika,
I’m really glad you took the patience to read the article 😉
to answer your question, I was very skeptical in the beginning to try it out as even I was worried about the lack of carbohydrates in the diet. But as I started it, I realised that for the amount of sugars we put in our body through the fruits and vegetables, we’ll be so full that we wouldn’t even realise we haven’t eaten any carbs.
No giddiness or anything. In fact by day four, I was sick of eating. My portions decreased and I no longer felt hunger pangs :)

      • http://www.stylecraze.com/members/kaartikasharma/ Kaartika

Thanks for the reply. I will definitely try it out then.

      • Nike-y Girl

i just started day one is not going so great i feel dizzy and light-headed, please advise me i don’t wanna give up.

        • Rmyah

if you feel hungry…you’re doing it wrong…!!!
try eating throughout the day rather than your regular meal times. that should help

Well, i dont agree with the fad diets at all. esp. gm diet, if u’ll monitor your weight, u’ll gain it right back within a week of eating right. these diet cut back on protein and other vital nutrients. the weight people generally loose is water weight. just monitor your weight after one week, all the lost weight will be right back. for healthy weight loss, one has to make lifestyle changes.

    • http://www.stylecraze.com/members/ramyaveerubhottla/ rmyah v

      Hi Shweta,
Thank you for posting your honest opinion. Let me tell you mine. I did the GM diet way back in october. It is january now. Almost four months to the day I finished the diet. I had lost 3 kilos, and I haven’t gained them back till now. My lifestyle hasn’t changed nor have my food habits. Where has the weight gone then?
I believe t has gone for good. And I certainly will be doing this again and again. If not for weightloss but for my general wellbeing. :)

      • http://www.stylecraze.com/members/shwetasarawgi/ shwetasarawgi (Glam ‘n Gloss)

Thats really good, if it hasn’t come back. all thumbs up for u :)

        • http://www.stylecraze.com/members/ramyaveerubhottla/ rmyah v

Thank you Shweta…the trick during the diet is to choose your fruits and vegetables in such a way that all the nutrient requirements are met.
We are in no way starving ourselves nor are we depriving the body of any of the nutrients/ calorie count required :) :)

          • http://www.stylecraze.com/members/shwetasarawgi/ shwetasarawgi (Glam ‘n Gloss)

I am more of an exercise person, i really dont get the dieting stuff, in past three year i had been in two major cosmopolitan gyms , one in New York and another in London, i have learnt this fro my trainers there. eating healthy and exercising is the best way for all around wellness. but anyways dear whatever works for ones body type is best suited for them. All the best for your future rendezvous ..

I’m getting shapes because of exercise but not loosing weight with i want to ripped of.

Please suggest me if I can follow the GM diet plan with any addition to meet my Protein requirement. Hope to hear from you soon..

          • Rmyah

this diet isnt designed for an intense workout because we simply cannot compensate enough energy with it. try having a portion of dal or lean meat with each meal to compensate with it

    good that you lost weight……..

  • Simrin

Heard a lot about this diet but it does have its own side effects which aint safe and can make you sick:(

  • yashika agarwalla

I followed this diet, but due poor availability of vegetables, i had sprouts along with tomatoes and onions. Also, i substituted rice with oats. But, I haven’t had any weight loss, I weigh 80 kgs & am still at that. But i do feel lighter. Will more such sessions of diet help me shed a bit of weight ?

    • khan

i feel the substitute is right.
but are you drinking the mentioned amount of water?
and you need to combine this diet with mild exercise and min half an hour walk..

  • kim

    can i eat something else for day 5? i hate tomatoes… :(

  • Mohan’s Ey Chikeetha

can we eat particular and some vegetables in 2nd and 3rd days like tomatoes, capscicum, onion and can we eat more tomatoes in 2nd day diet

  • Varsha

I have also gone through this diet several times, and managed to lose only 3kgs every time. Of which, 1 kg I would tend to put on very fast, but the other 2 kgs lost have stayed off me for ever. Hence, this diet is definitely worth a try. I have managed to take off 10 kgs off me, during a period of 6 months by just following this diet once a month for 6 months.

  • preethi

i have done this diet for 3 months now and must say that i have lost 13 kilos so far and put nothing back on. i have been eating fatty stuff inbetween this period and its just fantastic that all the weight you lose doesnt come back on. of all the diets i have tried i would recommend this one to any of them like me who are obese and have about 30 or more kilos to lose. i still have a long way to go in terms of losing more but can achieve it through this diet.

    • Priya

How often do u do this diet or say what’s the gap that u give in between each diet ?

    • khan

congrats. Combine the diet with mild exercise and a half an hour walk. You won’t feel dizzy or tired during the diet

  • shruti sreekumar

Hey i just started doing the GM diet and i have a doubt. On Day 5, Aren’t we suppose to eat Beef and Tomatoes ? And on Day 6, Beef and Vegetables ? Please help :)

It is very important to be careful about what one eats after the GM diet. It does not make sense to binge once the diet is over and expect the effect of the diet to continue. After the diet, it is important to start better exercising and eating habits. There is no fixed plan as to what you should eat after the GM diet. Here are some tips on what and how you should be eating after your GM diet.
      1. Cut down your intake of unhealthy treats such as sugary biscuits, confectionery and crisps.
      2. Avoid adding sugar to your coffee and tea.
      3. Avoid going in for a second helping at lunch or dinner.
      4. Consume smaller portions of your favorite meal.
      5. Avoid drinking fizzy drinks and drink plenty of water instead.
Hope you find these tips to be helpful !!

It is advisable that you consult a doctor or nutritionist who can guide you with your daily nutrition requirements to avoid any adverse effects of the diet.

You can have green tea any number of times a day.

  • Mona

I have done this diet numerous times. Have lost 27 kgs in all. I would alternate every week. On the week that I was off GM I would follow a low calorie, low fat diet. One very important detail was missed out in this article, is the soup – THE WONDER SOUP. You MUST (absolutely MUST) have this soup in very large quantities. Otherwise you won’t lose weight. Google for the recipe. Another very important factor is you cannot keep yourself hungry. You must keep eating as often as required to keep you feeling full. Otherwise you won’t lose as much weight and also will put back everything that you lost. Hope this helps folks trying to lose weight.

Hi Mina, the GM diet plan in some cases may cause severe malnutrition. One can repeat the diet once a month or in two or three months and it is not recommended for pregnant women or growing children whose nutritional requirements are high. It is also not recommended for those with ailments like arthritis and heart disease. It’s best to consult one’s doctor and take clearance before going on this diet.

The wonder soup can be eaten in unlimited quantities and on any day of the General Motors Diet.

Dear Ash, losing weight or gaining weight with bananas depends on how much you eat. If you eat almost nothing and just bananas, you lose weight, but if you eat eight to ten bananas a day, apart from consuming regular meals, you can gain weight. Bananas have weight loss properties. A medium 7- to 8-inch banana has around 105 calories, which amounts to 17.5 grams of carbohydrates. Our body needs carbohydrates for smooth body functioning and excess carbohydrates can lead to weight gain. Bananas are also loaded with fibre, vitamins and minerals. They also contains pectin, which leaves you feeling fuller for a longer time. This makes bananas ideal for any weight loss programme. I hope you found this info to be useful !!

  • http://www.stylecraze.com/ StyleCraze

Dear Daniela, most of us tend to struggle after dieting in keeping off the weight we have lost. The biggest problem is that most of us go back to the same unhealthy lifestyle we were a part of before the diet. Two of the most important tips in keeping the weight off are: cut all the sugar and cut the gluten from your diet. Cut all types of refined sugar, brown, coconut, maple syrup, honey, brown rice syrup, cane in all its forms, juice, powdered, raw, pure cane, all fake sweeteners and so on. If you can accomplish cutting these two foods groups, you will be well on your way to keeping your weight off! Secondly use the diet plan in weekly intervals to maintain the achieved weight combined with proper exercise to avoid bouts of fatigue and other related health risks.

  • http://www.stylecraze.com/ StyleCraze

Hi, you can have a cup of plain cooked rice or a cup of brown rice. Along with rice you can consume tomatoes, cottage cheese, red kidney beans, sprouts, spinach, tofu, cucumber and sofa chunks.

  • http://www.stylecraze.com/ StyleCraze

Hi Megha, GM diet is a weight management program, basically it is designed to cleanse and detoxify your body and make you look and feel better. However when done in excess it may lead to serious health conditions such as fatigue, muscle weakness, incessant thirst and dehydration and metabolic slowdown etc. Hence it is advisable that you follow this program once or twice in a month and not continuously..alternate week would be better. Also it is advisable that you consult a physician for proper medical monitoring while following this diet.

  • http://www.stylecraze.com/ StyleCraze

Dear Ayyaz, GM diet is beneficial for people who are looking for cleansing or detoxing their body along with losing a couple of pounds. Every kind of diet has its pros and cons. To understand which diet is better or suitable for you to lose weight, it is advisable that you consult a physician or a nutritionist who is guide you keeping your condition in mind. It is also important that you indulge in some kind of physical exercise along with following a diet to lose weight.

Hi Feena, if you can drink milk then you can substitute it with greek yogurt or choose soy milk/ almond milk/ lite coconut milk. If you want to replace milk for something else then pick some healthy fruits and forget the milk. Bananas are a rich source of potassium and are placed in this order that is on the fourth day to replenish the potassium stores in your body that are lost in the past 2-3 days. Milk will provide proteins along with other vital nutrients. However if you don’t like either of them then you can have the third option in unlimited amounts whenever you feel hungry and that is the wonder soup. You can add all the vegetables you like except potatoes in this soup. For example you can use spinach, onions, cabbage, spring onions, tomatoes and celery. Tear and chop these to get medium pieces and boil them in water till done. You can have a clear soup like this or if you don’t want to chew the vegetables you can blend this soup to get a smooth liquid. Other spices like salt, pepper, chilies, ginger, garlic and coriander can be added according to your choice to increase the taste.

Hi Lien, the GM Diet is not all about fruits and vegetables. The GM Diet has a fair sprinkling of meat that can be eaten at various points during the seven day program. Beef is an essential item on the GM diet grocery list. Beef is eaten on the fifth day of the diet. Chicken is a great substitute for beef. Chicken works really well for individual that do not eat beef. Keep in mind however that chicken must be served lean and free of skin. If you prefer fish to any other kind of meat then you can use it as a substitute for beef or chicken. Follow the diet plan in regular intervals of time until desired weight is attained. Use the diet plan in weekly intervals to maintain the achieved weight combined with proper exercise to avoid bouts of fatigue and other related health risks.

Hi Kelly, there are many kinds of white rice available, ranging from short-grain sushi rice from Japan to long, slender Basmati rice from India. White rice is a refined grain, meaning that the bran husk has been removed from the endosperm. A 1-cup serving of white rice contains about 150 – 200 calories. Nearly all of these calories are carbohydrates. So, if you want to lose weight you need not completely avoid rice but you can consume it in moderate quantities.

Hi, the diet will work effectively if you have a whole fruit instead of just juice. Whole fruit provides a whole lot more nutrition than just fruit juice. Focusing upon two components of fruit that is the skin and the pulp which has higher fiber content and fiber aids in weight loss.

Hi Ashley, brown rice and sweet potatoes are healthy options. Sweet potato may be used instead of the regular potato, as long as there is no sugar added to the meal. Brown rice is the better choice than white rice. Brown rice can be used as a white rice alternative in most recipes and provides a full, rich and somewhat nutty flavor.

Hi Suman, the first day of GM diet advises you to eat as many fruits as possible with the exception of bananas. So having just apples and lemons is less. Include a variety of fruits in first day diet like oranges, papaya, watermelon, cantaloupe, pomegranate, apples, peaches, pears, strawberries etc. Have fruits whenever you are hungry.

Dear Srini, the answer is no. People who are suffering from hypertension, diabetes and heart problems are advised not to go on a GM diet. A diabetic patient requires a well-balanced diet and adequate nutrition, and he/she may not get the required nutrition by following a GM diet. Instead of the GM diet for diabetes, you could follow these simple diabetic diet tips for weight loss:
    1. Drink at least 6 to 7 glasses of water daily.
    2. Exercise for half an hour, five days per week.
    3. Increase your fiber intake by including foods such as oat bran and oatmeal, ground flax seeds, and cooked and raw vegetables in your diet.
    4. Chew your food carefully and slowly while eating.
    5. Fill up on the diet foods that help you lose weight. Raw vegetables such as cucumbers, celery, lettuce, bell peppers use as many calories for digestion as the number of calories they add to your body.
    Hope these tips help you.
